RICHARD TUTTLE and KIKI SMITH

Bouquet, gold, silk, wire, wood, 8 ½ x 9 x 5 ½ inches /21.6 x 22.9 x 14 cm., signed and numbered, edition of 18, 2001

please contact gallery for price

Notice: Kiki Smith's contribution to Bouquet is an 18 karat gold pin cast from the tip of her tongue, and perched on the crest of the silk wave created by Tuttle's armature.  This body piece is a delicate bridge between Smith's earlier body works and her recent work with decorative motifs and precious materials.  Richard Tuttle has created a sculpture that acts as a display for the pin as well as the swath of damask, a 19th Century reproduction of a 16th Century silk cloth. The simple armature is constructed from raw wood, wire and hardware;  materials the artist has worked with to great effect for decades.  The pin is meant to be worn, essentially an example of two elements that exist separately but that are always meant to come together to be complete.

NotThePoint, artists' book / object, 9.2 x 5 to 14 x 13 to 18 cm. /3.6 x 2 to 5.5 x 5.1 to 7.1 inches, edition 9, signed and numbered, 2009

NotThePoint is composed of five differently coloured, hand-bound books with letterpress printed texts on handmade paper. Each of the five books focuses on the source of each colour’s origin within the ideal context of human experience. The books are held upright in an elaborately crafted holding-case of pigmented sycamore wood and cardboard which has been dyed yellow. The publication was created by Richard Tuttle. The director of the edition is Elena Foster. Miranda Sharp recorded and transcribed the text. Rob Hadrill manufactured the holding case and printed the books. Lori Sauer was the bookbinder. Lorraine Wild designed the typography. The edition is numbered and signed by the artist.
