KIKI SMITH / SETON SMITH

This book combines two kinds of imagery. It pairs together Beam of Light, Kiki Smith’s drawings from the Vision Hour collages, with Seton Smith’s photographs of Hangzhou and the Pedder Building in Hong Kong. Page after page, one is confronted by alternating moods, either shifting towards the marvel of nature or sliding into cloistered spaces. It suggests ancient dichotomies, like heaven and hell, body and soul, decomposition and growth.

Kiki Smith's contribution to Bouquet is an 18 karat gold pin cast from the tip of her tongue, and perched on the crest of the silk wave created by Tuttle's armature.  This body piece is a delicate bridge between Smith's earlier body works and her recent work with decorative motifs and precious materials.  Richard Tuttle has created a sculpture that acts as a display for the pin as well as the swath of damask, a 19th Century reproduction of a 16th Century silk cloth. The simple armature is constructed from raw wood, wire and hardware;  materials the artist has worked with to great effect for decades.  The pin is meant to be worn, essentially an example of two elements that exist separately but that are always meant to come together to be complete.
