The works I pray thee / Ask no questions (1) and (2) show black-and-white bodies embroidered on canvas using a traditional-looking cross-stitch. The figures, both in sleeping position, look transparent and seem to be hovering in an empty space that is marked by a seam at several points.
Loose threads created during the technical embroidery process suggest the spinning of a cocoon, knots, perhaps bondage. A patch of dark stitches has been stitched over as if erased and resembles a shadow on an invisible floor. The mood is serene but it is difficult to guess what is going on in the women's minds.
The title of the works, I pray thee / Ask no questions, is taken from the motto of the novel Call it Sleep by Henry Roth. A dummy of this book was used as a sketchbook during the making of the pictures.
